Xu Zhonglin was born in Nanjing, which was called Yingtian Fu in the Ming dynasty.
He was commonly known as the author of ''Fengshen Yanyi'' . Some say Xu wrote this book for a for his daughter. His ''hao'', a kind of Chinese courtesy name, might be Zhongshan Yishou , which literally means a carefree old man living in Zhongshan. The name appears in Chapter 2 of ''Fengshen Yanyi''; this name provides evidence that the authorship of that classical novel belongs to him.
